Task 2: Self-Observation and Analysis of Creating a Study Plan

Here is my diagram for how I planned my studies this fall. The black ink blots represent processes and operations, the red blots represent instruments and resources.

Unfortunately Blogspot is refusing to let me display it in its full size so you have to click on the image to download a PDF version.

  1. Hey,
A rather minimalistic, but at the same time a very cool and funky scheme :)
It is interesting how you have tried to put processes/operations and instruments/resources on the same scheme. You have also pointed out how some activities can produce "artifacts", which can be used to carry out next processes or operations.
Could you elaborate a bit further how would you use lectures for creating mental image of scheduling extraordinary events? I start to question here what is meant by extraordinary event?
Secondly, could you elaborate a bit further what exactly do you mean by that ("Weekly intuitive mental image for things to come in school" as well as the other one "…in work and private life") ?
    Cheers,

  3. Hey, Terje!

I should have perhaps elaborated on this scheme in the blog post and explain what I mean with all the terms, otherwise it's confusing

By extraordinary events I mean projects, bigger homework assignments, exams, the dates when a lecture period starts and ends - stuff that comes along irregularly and has to be considered within a bigger time-scale.

Conversely, by routine weekly events I mean classes, homework assignments you can be sure will be handed out every week - stuff that you have to do repeatedly and can be grasped within a time-frame of 7 days.

Lectures are simply sources of information just like all the course blogs, Google Calendars and the e-mail correspondence, at the end of which you are left with an idea of how routine events will take place and dates for extraordinary events.

I take all this information and synthesize it into my weekly plan in my head and that is essentially what my "weekly intuitive mental image for things to come in school" stands for.

I go through a roughly similar process for achieving some sort of mental plan for my private and work life. At the end of it all I have an intuitive idea of what I have to do this month, this week and on that particular day.

Any conflicts will be dealt with by prioritizing the conflicting "entries" and then I arrive at "Attend, Skip, Do and Negotiate."

But there's really not that much conscious deliberation throughout this process. It's more just something I do - just like breathing or walking. And if I try and brake that apart into a diagram, I end up with something that borders on a joke, if we're being completely honest :)

I think it's more interesting how Katri Tammsaar arrives at the IMKE Google Calendar plan, because she really does all the work for us as far as planning studies in concerned.

    I hope this helps...

    Best,
    Jakob
